Carnelian – a pretty gemstone or the world’s most ancient answer for prozac and viagra (or How to Rock like an Egyptian)?

This innocent little gem has been used in jewelry for the last 2,000 years and is supposed to bring you everything from good luck, energy, strength, confidence, inner peace, creativity, good health, protection from the evil eye, fertility and a crazy desire to get freaky in bed.

You may not have heard of this decorative panacea before but a quick search on Google revealed carnelian is a semi-precious mineral from the quartz family and was highly valued in ancient times as a gemstone and often worn as jewelry.

Artifacts date back to the early Greek period where it was used in amulets designed to bring the owner good luck. The ancient Egyptians believed carnelian had supernatural powers to protect the living AND the dead and would place these stones on a freshly wrapped mummy to ensure the dearly departed enjoyed a safe journey to the afterlife. This stone’s record of accomplishments gets rather long as time moves on and by the time the dark ages rolled around it picked up a reputation for curing depression, boosting energy, preventing the plague, increasing sexual desire and reversing impotence. Sounds like a modern day combo of Prozac, Airborne, and Viagra with a side of magic beans.

Carnelian certain has a reputation that’s impossibly…wait for it….LEGENDARY, but it’s still hugely popular with fans of feng shui and the pseudoscience of crystal healing. I’ve had no experience with either, so I won’t comment on its effectiveness as a healing agent. Frankly, I like it because it’s pretty, comes in a variety of reds and oranges and is affordable to work with.

I picked up some stones to make the earrings you see below –  long before I knew of its much praised benefits . Do I feel lucky, energetic, peaceful, and incredibly amorous when I wear them? Not particularly, although that would be awesome. I do feel good though, because they’re elegant, attractive and I love them. You can find them on my Etsy shop and each pair is handmade to order.
